- People often told Carl Storm he looked like the actor James Brolin. There was no question where Derrick had gotten his good looks.
- “You know , every time I hear the name Ramon Russo I think of the guy who played the part of the jock in 2 Cool for School back in the nineties,” Storm said. “Did you ever watch that show?”
“I can’t say as I did.”
“Oh, it was so funny. Every time this one character saw a pretty girl he’d say, ‘Hubba-hubba.’ So when you say the name Ramon Russo it makes me think, ‘Hubba-hubba.’”
- “We’re looking into all possibilities,” Rodriguez said. “Moving on, Flight 494 had a couple of bigwigs, a professional athlete, some business types. But the biggest name was Congressman Erik Vaughn.”
A new image appeared. It was the beady-eyed, puffy-faced visage of the congressman, topped with helmet hair that never seemed to move.
“Eww… am I allowed to say I hate that guy?” Storm asked.”
- “No shame in having a ghostwriter,” Storm said. “Some of the best books published every year are penned by talented writers whose identity the public will never know.”
- “But even the most loving, protective father realizes he eventually needs to let his child make his— or her— own decisions. All the father can do is hope he has instilled enough of the right values in the child that those decisions are the right ones.”
- “Rodriguez shrugged. “Okay, let’s see here. Flight 312 had Pi aboard.”
A photo of an unshaven, unkempt young man with a mop for a head of hair appeared on the screen. He vaguely resembled a grown Muppet.
Rodriguez continued: “Pi is the leader of the International Order of Fruitarians, a quasi-religious group that tries to convince people that fruit is the original diet of mankind—nutrition as God intended . Really, it’s a cult. It slowly lures innocent college kids, especially unsuspecting young women, into its clutches and then eventually brainwashes them into doing things like selling flowers at the airport.”
“Maybe the father of one of these kids who lost his daughter to this nonsense decided to seek ultimate revenge and fire a rocket at the airplane the guy was on,” Storm said. “A father would go to any length to protect his daughter from a monster like that.””
- “There were others, too. Some more famous than others. And I guess it depends on your definition of famous. One of the people on the first plane down was Rachel McCord.”
“The porn star?” Storm burst.
Rodriguez arched an eyebrow. “Gee, Storm, how did you know about her?”
“I… I… read about her in a magazine once,” Storm said.”
-“My grandpa Storm was an old-fashioned gentleman. He escorted my grandmother by the arm everywhere they went, even if they were just walking into the grocery store . And he always held the door for her. Didn’t matter what kind of door— a car door, a barn door, a bathroom door. If there was a door, Grandpa Storm was going to hold it for her. He loved my grandmother, and that was one of the small ways he showed how much he appreciated her.
“Anyhow, they were going into a restaurant one day when Grandpa was hit by a massive heart attack. It should have killed him on the spot. But there was a door to be opened. I don’t know if he worried my grandmother didn’t know how to open one or what. Somehow Grandpa managed to stumble to the door and hold it for my grandmother. It was literally his dying act. When the paramedics came, they had to drag him away from the doorway. At the funeral, I told everyone that I don’t know whether or not there’s a heaven. But if there is, Grandpa is there, holding the door for Grandma.” (…..)
“So that’s what love is,” he concluded. “Or at least that’s what love is to me.”
- “I love you. I’ve missed you so much and no matter what happens, I want you to know you were the most wonderful part of my life. Being married to you has been the best thing I’ve ever done. And if I don’t make it back, I want you to know that I loved you right until the very last breath I took. And if there is something after that, the first thing I’ll do when I get there is to start loving you all over again, you hear?” |
